Why iPhones use HEIC, and why it causes pain
Apple switched to HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container, based on HEVC) in iOS 11 because it stores the same photo at roughly half the size of JPG, and can hold extras like depth maps and Live Photo frames. Great for your phone's storage.
The trouble starts everywhere else. Windows needs a codec extension to even preview HEIC, plenty of websites and forms reject the format outright, Android handling is inconsistent, and email recipients often can't open the attachment. Converting to JPG sidesteps all of it: JPG is the one format every device, browser, and app has understood for decades.
