Why the format has to be PNG
A circle is just a square image with its four corners made see-through. JPG cannot store transparency, so if you save a circle crop as JPG those corners fill with solid white or black and you lose the round effect entirely. PNG supports an alpha channel that records exactly which pixels are transparent.
That is why this tool exports PNG: the circle stays a circle no matter what background it lands on, whether that is a dark profile header, a colored card, or a slide. WebP also supports transparency if you need a smaller file, but PNG is the safest universal choice.
Where circular avatars get used
Most platforms display profile pictures as circles even when you upload a square: Slack, Discord, Gmail, Teams, WhatsApp, and many forums and apps. Pre-cropping to a circle matters when you place that image somewhere the platform does not mask it for you, such as a website team page, an email signature, a resume, or a presentation slide.
Uploading a true circular PNG means the edges look intentional and clean rather than a square photo with corners poking out. Start from at least a 400×400 source so the avatar stays sharp at the sizes these apps render.
