Blur vs pixelate, and why strength matters

Blur smears neighboring pixels into a soft smudge; pixelate replaces a region with a few large solid blocks. Both hide detail, but only if you go far enough. A weak blur or a coarse-but-shallow pixelation can sometimes be partly reversed or read by eye, because traces of the original survive. The safe approach is a strong, irreversible setting: a heavy blur radius or large pixel blocks that flatten the area into mush. The goal of redaction is to permanently destroy the information, not just make it slightly harder to read.

Redact before you share, every time

  • Always redact on a copy and check the saved file; the preview can look stronger than the export.
  • Cover the whole sensitive element with margin, not just the center, so edges of a plate or word do not leak.
  • Do not rely on placing a shape "on top" in some apps; a real blur changes the pixels themselves so nothing hides underneath.
  • Once an unredacted version is posted, sent, or backed up, you cannot un-share it. Redact first, then upload.
  • For faces and plates, prefer a heavy pixelate or strong blur over a light one; light effects can sometimes be undone.

Blur or pixelate — which should I use?

Both hide detail. Pixelate gives the recognizable mosaic look; blur is softer. For truly sensitive info, use a strong setting so the original can't be reconstructed.

Can I blur more than one area?

Is the blurred image safe to share?

The effect is permanent in the exported PNG — the hidden pixels are replaced, not just covered. Use a high strength for anything truly sensitive.

Should I use blur or pixelate to hide a face or plate?
